Dispensations: putting the Bible into context.
Dispensations, is it Biblical?
The answer is an asounding 'yes'. We took a look at this verse in our 'salvation' page but let's look at it again.
II Timothy 2:15 says, Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
The text in bold above clearly tells us that the Bible must be disected correctly. But how do we do this? There are two ways in which this is accomplished.
1. By Covenants: the agreements God made with Man throughout time. Today we are in the New Covenant aka the Church Age or the Period of Grace which is based on 'Faith & Faith Alone'. Of these two ways, this method will never get you wrong when it pertains to salvation & living under the correct gospel of 'faith & faith alone'.
2. By Dispensation: And don't let the long word confuse you, all it means is time periods, time frames, eras, etc. When using dispensational theology, your simply dividing time periods between 'Who' God was talking to & 'When' He was talking to them. If you believe in the Old Testament & the New Testament, that is a simple form of dispensational teaching. You are a dispensationalist because those are two distinct but different periods in the bible that you are dividing & putting into correct context.
As a dispensationalist, we believe we can learn from all the Bible but we do however reject anything that can jeopardize our salvation from being kept intact. For example...Jesus taught that in order to get saved, one must repent, be baptized & receive the Holy Spirit, but as we learned earlier, this teaching was for the Jewish people, whom Jesus came to save. Under the New Covenant given to Paul by God, 'we don't have to' (works), repent or be baptized to be saved. Clear example-the thief on the cross who didn't have time to repent or be baptized, yet Jesus promised he would be in Paradise, simply for believing. Under our New Covenant, all we have to do is believe. (Period!) Anything else is 'adding to or working for our salvation' which belittles & nullifies everything Christ did on the cross.
So then, how do we correctly divide the Bible & put it into correct context? Simple. All you do is ask: is this for today's Christian under the New Covenant or for someone under the Old Covenant?
Example: the Bible says not to eat unclean food (Old Covenant). Jesus however said its not the food that you put into your mouth that is bad, it's what comes out of your mouth that is bad (New Covenant).
Example: Adultery was punishable by death (Old Covenant). However, Jesus said forgive as the Father has forgiven you (New Covenant).
Example: Obey & observe the 10 Commandments (Old Covenant). However, Jesus said Love is the greatest commandment of all. When you love, you fulfill all the commandments (New Covenant).
Example: you must do this, this & this to be saved (Old Covenant). You must believe (New Covenant).
So...next time someone argues you must do this & this to be saved...nope, all you have to do is believe in Him crucified (period!)
Why is Dispensationalism, disregarded?
Simply put...because everyone has an agenda. Many churches are under 501 (c)(3) status. Under this status, churches must comply to government policy & mandate or they lose special tax credit. This goes against the 1st Amendment that prohibits Congress enacting law that prohibits or restricts religion.
Then you have those who think of themselves as rock stars & because they love a huge audience, they would rather keep you in the pews every week than telling you the truth & setting you free. Imagine if everyone knew the truth & instead of holding down church benches week after week, they were out telling people the truth & actually bringing many to salvation.
Next you have those who have made it a big booming business of being a preacher, buying airplanes & jets, building mega churches & even hosting reality shows on cable about the lifestyle of the rich & famous Sunday Bible thumper. In reality, it's not because they don't want to tell you the truth, it's because they don't want to set you free. A man with truth on his side is a very dangerous man, it's this that 'they' fear.
Finally, you have those who are just plain ignorant & lazy & just spew out whatever they hear someone else say because it's popular, it's catchy, it brings in the crowds or it brings in large amounts of money. These types know more about the man on the moon than they do about anything that is in the bible.
And just so you know, dispensationalism has been taught since the 1820's, about the time Mormonism came to be taught & preached. Under John Darby, C.I.Scofield, Charles Larkin & countless others through the decades, dispensationalism has been taught & has survived not as a religion, but as teaching the Bible in a way that it proves scripture over & over, never contradicting itself like so many other theologies & religions do, always making clear & concise points backed up by the Bible itself. Dispensationalism never asks for opinions, guesses or thought, it merely tells what the Bible states & then proves it by backing it up with scripture.
